Review of Udemy's: Complete 2017 SEO Training With Top SEO Expert Peter Kent!
This Udemy course is by long-time search engine expert Peter Kent. I got it because it came up in the Udemy search results when I search for Jason-LD. As I had mentioned in other posts, Udemy's search engine won't always find you the best courses!
To be completely fair, this is a beginner through an advanced course. I've been doing SEO nearly as long as Peter Kent, so my knowledge is on the superior side. If you are new to SEM, this would be as good a place as any to learn the basics like meta title, description, connecting search console and how to get indexed.
Some Training Is Outdated
Some of the subjects he touches on aren't relevant these days, such as submitting to search engine directories, meta keywords, how content isn't important opposed to links, submitting to search engines and DMOZ.
I like and what makes up about 40% of the curriculum, is if you have been in the SEO Community you have the for years that “links are dead“. The fact is this couldn't be further from the truth. Google's core “PageRank” algorithm was invented by co-founder Larry Paige hence the name “PageRank.” Google used to display Page rank in a browser extension, but it hasn't released a public update of PageRank in over three years. It seems unlikely that the will again.
Are Links Dead Yet?
That said, if links and PageRank are dead, why does Google not want public access to this data? And why are they still concerned about link pyramid schemes? The answer is simple it's because they count!
A great example Peter Kent gives in the training is the subject of the nofollow tag. The Nofollow tag was primarily invented as a way devalue comment spam in blogs. It tells Google not to add trust or to the site that it is linking. All of the links in Facebook and Twitter use the Nofollow tag. Google has indexed millions of pages on both platforms. It seems almost ridiculous for Google to be wasting its resources indexing all of this data if they are not using it because of eight letters of code.
Along with the advice on building more links, he also ones you about the dangers of toxic links, to never do reciprocal links and the importance of quality over quantity.
About Peter Kent
Peter Kent wrote “Search Engine Optimization for Dummies” in 2003 and has been active in the field of technology since 1979, which adds a nice historical element. He discusses the original name Google being Backrub (I'll link you/you link me), some of the most famous Googlebombs (miserable failure), why they work and why the PageRank algorithm is the whole reason Google has been able to dominate in search.
To sum things up, at least from my perspective it was like watching a movie that didn't get good until you've watched half of it. There is a lot of value in Complete 2017 SEO Training With Top SEO Expert Peter Kent!
Unlike other review sites, who are also affiliates and give five-star ratings to everything but have never touched the product, you can see by the screenshot I completed all eight hours. Did I get value from it? Sure. If I was less experienced it would have been being more. So if you were asking me if I endorsed this course, for the full $200 price. I can't say YES, but if you are new to SEO he explains in basic topics as good as anyone. I would wait for one of those Udemy discounts and if you can pick up this training for $10-$15 bucks, its a gem!
